Founder & CEO, Krista Software
The Story BEHIND
Krista Software was founded in 2016 by John Michelsen, previously the founder of iTKO Inc. (acquired by CA Technologies), with a vision to transform how organizations implement and interact with automation technologies. The company recognized a fundamental challenge in the enterprise software landscape: despite significant advancements in artificial intelligence and process automation, these technologies remained inaccessible to many organizations due to implementation complexity and the specialized skills required.

Traditional approaches to automation often created rigid systems that couldn't adapt to changing business needs without extensive redevelopment. Krista's leadership team, drawing on decades of enterprise software experience, envisioned a platform that could bridge the gap between sophisticated AI capabilities and practical business applications through conversational interfaces. With approximately 80 employees across the United States and India, and having secured around $20 million in funding (including a $15 million Series A round in 2022),

Krista approached Omnizone to help refine and enhance their platform's user experience and integration capabilities. The goal was to create a solution that would truly democratize access to AI-powered automation, enabling business users to create and modify complex workflows without coding while supporting seamless integration with existing enterprise systems.
Industry CHALLENGES
Technical Barriers to AI Adoption
Organizations across industries recognize the potential of artificial intelligence to transform their operations, but implementation typically requires specialized data science expertise and extensive development resources. Many companies struggle with the complexity of integrating AI technologies into their existing systems and processes, leading to lengthy deployment timelines and disappointing results. The traditional approach to AI implementation involves substantial coding efforts, creating a dependency on technical teams that limits business agility and adoption. Krista needed a solution that could eliminate these technical barriers without sacrificing sophistication, enabling organizations to rapidly deploy AI capabilities within their workflows regardless of their technical maturity or resources.
Fragmented System Landscapes
Modern enterprises operate across dozens or even hundreds of different applications and data sources, creating significant challenges for process automation. Traditional integration approaches require building and maintaining complex connections between systems, with changes to underlying applications often breaking these integrations and requiring extensive rework. This fragmentation leads to information silos, inefficient processes that cross system boundaries, and an inability to deliver consistent experiences across customer and employee touchpoints. Krista recognized the need for a more resilient approach to integration that could adapt to changing system landscapes while maintaining process integrity, enabling organizations to create end-to-end automations that span multiple systems without creating brittle dependencies.
AI Technology Evolution and Lock-in
The artificial intelligence landscape is evolving at an unprecedented pace, with new models and capabilities emerging continuously. Organizations implementing AI directly into their applications face significant challenges when trying to adopt newer, better-performing models, as switching typically requires extensive redevelopment. This creates a form of technical lock-in where companies must either forego improvements or invest substantially in redevelopment. As highlighted by industry leaders, the inability to "hot swap" between different AI models represents a significant limitation for businesses seeking to maintain competitive advantage through AI adoption. Krista needed to develop an abstraction layer that would allow organizations to leverage the best AI technologies available without committing to specific vendors or models, protecting their investments while enabling continuous innovation.
How We
Delivered
1
User Experience Design & Conversational Interface Development
Omnizone began by conducting comprehensive research into how business users interact with automation tools, identifying key friction points and opportunities to simplify complex processes through conversational design. Working closely with Krista's team, we developed a conversational interface framework that translated technical capabilities into natural language interactions, allowing users to "Ask Krista" to perform complex business processes using everyday language. This approach required careful attention to language patterns, conversation flows, and context management to ensure the system could accurately interpret user intent across diverse business scenarios. Through iterative user testing, we refined the interface to accommodate varying levels of technical sophistication, ensuring both novice users and experienced process designers could effectively leverage the platform's capabilities without specialized training
2
Integration Architecture & Connector Development
A critical aspect of Krista's value proposition was its ability to seamlessly connect with diverse enterprise systems and AI services. Omnizone designed and implemented a flexible integration architecture that separated business logic from technical integration details, enabling non-technical users to define processes while the system handled the complexity of system interactions. We developed a comprehensive library of pre-built connectors for common enterprise systems and AI services, incorporating standardized approaches for authentication, data transformation, and error handling. The architecture supported both synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns, enabling real-time interactions where needed while supporting long-running processes that might span hours or days. This approach dramatically reduced the technical expertise required to implement integrations while ensuring high performance and reliability across diverse system landscapes.
3
AI Orchestration Layer & Model Management
To address the challenge of AI model lock-in, Omnizone designed a sophisticated orchestration layer that abstracted the specifics of different AI services behind a unified interface. This architecture enabled Krista to connect with multiple AI providers—including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and open-source models—while presenting a consistent experience to process designers and end users. We implemented capabilities for intelligent model routing based on accuracy, performance, and cost considerations, allowing organizations to optimize their AI usage across different providers. The system included comprehensive monitoring and analytics for AI interactions, enabling continuous improvement of model selection and prompt engineering. This approach provided organizations with unprecedented flexibility in their AI strategy, allowing them to switch between models or providers with minimal disruption while maintaining process integrity and performance.
